The ancient site at Naurangabad is located 10 km to the east of the districtheadquarters Bhiwani,on Rohtak road in Haryana. The mound is very large in size, spreading over an area of about 58 acres. The site was first explored in 1963 followed by further investigations.A large number of coins, coin-moulds, seals and sealingsand other antiquities like terracotta and stone sculptures of Yaudheyas, Indo-Greeks, Kushanas and Guptashave been reported from surface explorations.
The Excavation Branch-II of Archaeological Survey of India (under the direction of Shri P.B.S. Sengar) carried out a small-scale archaeological excavation at the site in the year 2001-2002. The excavation has revealed a tentative sequence of three cultural periods with habitational deposit of about 9.0 m. Period-I is sub-divisible into two sub-periods. Period-IA represented by a deposit of about 1.8 m has brought to light, part of a mud-brick fortification wall, U shape hearth, seven courses mud-brick wall, post hole and other finds. Structural activities of Period-IB include burnt brick retaining wall, meant for protecting and strengthening the early mud-brick fortification wall of Period-IA was unearthed at the periphery of the city. Evidence of ditch/moat was also unearthed from Period-IB.Naurangabad had emerged as a fortified town of north India in Period-I.Period-II is marked a deposit of about 1.15 m which has revealed houses of mud brick and burnt brick walls. Period-III is marked by a deposit of about 1.60 m and represented by two structural phases. These03periods belong to the early Yaudheyas, Kushanas and late Yaudheyas respectively.A variety of antiquities belonging to these cultural periods were also found from the excavation. Aurangabad was known as Nakanagar during 1st-3rd Century CE and was an important town of Yaudheya Republic in ancientIndia as revealed from inscriptional evidences.
In view of its historical importance, it was declared protected as a monument of national importance vide notification no. 2025 dated 02.07.1988.
